Meridian School Environmental Leadership Award
Guidelines for nominations

This award is open to people working within schools in the Wellington region leading a school project or initiative that improves or protects the local environment.
Nominees may include teachers, students, parents, board members, volunteers or staff members of any primary, intermediate and secondary school. A successful candidate will be leading a project that includes students as active participants.
Any person, school, group, or organisation (except Greater Wellington employees) can nominate a candidate for this award.
Applications and judging
Applications open in June and close in September each year. For more information download the Meridian School Environmental Leadership Award application form. Email completed application forms along with any photos to awards@gw.govt.nz.
The award will be judged by a panel including a Greater Wellington Councillor, a teacher from Greater Wellington and an external expert.
Criteria
Key factors considered by the judges are:
- Leadership in facilitating or supporting environmental education for sustainability
- The level of student ownership, leadership and involvement
- Wider school/community involvement
- Environmental outcomes
- Student educational outcomes
- Motivating and inspiring others to lead
- Long-term sustainability
Awards presentation
The award is presented at a function hosted by Greater Wellington in early December. The winner will receive a certificate and $500, which should be spent on a relevant training or networking opportunity, professional development, membership of an appropriate organisation, or a learning experience. Merit awards may also made for suitable candidates.
