Walking and cycling journey planner

It's now easier than ever  to plan a walking or cycling trip in the region with the new interactive journey planner.Cyclist

All you need to do is key in your starting and finishing addresses, and you'll have all the information you need for your journey.

You'll find out how long your journey will take, how hilly the trip is, and an estimate of how many calories you'll burn! Detailed route directions will be provided in a print friendly format. Bike racks, drinking fountains, toilets and points of interest such as parks, and places to get on public transport will be shown.

We're always looking to improve the journey planner to make sure it's as accurate and useful as possible. Please contact Simon Kennett, Active Transport and Road Safety Coordinator simon.kennett@gw.govt.nz  if you have any feedback about the planner.

Plan your sweet summer journey and be in to win!

Plan a trip using the cycling and walking journey planner, tell us what makes your trip special, and you could win a voucher to one of the region’s top destinations.

Simon Kennett, Greater Wellington’s Active Transport and Road Safety Coordinator, says this coming anniversary weekend is the perfect opportunity to plan a cycling or walking trip to enjoy your favourite excursion, or perhaps try out a new city or suburban trip.

“The journey planner has lots of amazing features that make planning your trip fun – and given our notorious summer weather so far, planning your trip may be the closest you get to doing it!

“The planner will show you how hilly part of your trip will be, where there are parks, playgrounds and drinking fountains. For those people still needing to shed a few Christmas kilos, you’ll see how many calories you’re likely to burn on your trip. And a brand new calculator, that has just been added to the planner, shows you the health gains of your journey, the savings you’ve made by not using your car, and your carbon savings.”

To enter the competition, which runs until 30 March 2010, go to the walking and cycling journey planner and plan your trip. Then immediately click on one of the feedback options, key in your details and write a few lines about why this trip appeals to you. You will then be entered in the weekly draw.

Prizes include vouchers to: Bowlarama; several Upper Hutt cafes; H2O Extreme Upper Hutt; Junglerama at Newtown; Lighthouse cinemas; Mud Cycles Bike Hire and Service; Silverstream Golf Park; A Day in Pompeii exhibition , or the Deep Ride or the High Ride at Te Papa; and ZEALANDIA: the Karori Sanctuary Experience.

Simon Kennett says trips do not have to be long or particularly adventurous. “They just have to be special for you.” Recent winning destinations include a cycle ride from Waikanae Beach to the Paraparaumu Beach ice cream shop. We are told it’s a great combination of quiet roads, nature reserves and best of all a nice cheap ice cream shop at the end to give you the energy to get back home. Great ride for adults and kids.

“And a Tawa mother won a prize for an easy 12 minute walk she planned, which featured stops at the library and the park for her two young sons.”
