Otari-Wilton's Bush and Trelissick Park/Ngaio Gorge
Where can you find the groups?
The Otari-Wilton's Bush Trust Care Group has been working in and aroundOtari-Wilton's Bush Reserve. The Group has restored an area alongside the Kaiwharawhara Stream above Otari-Wilton's Bush Reserve and for the next few years will be working with the Trelissick Park/Ngaio Gorge Group on various other projects within the Kaiwharawhara catchment. Check out an aerial photo of the area.
The Trelissick Park and Ngaio Gorge Working Group has been working primarily within Trelissick Park for much of the last 15 years. The focus has been on restoring the streamside environment andcreating tracks so that people can enjoy a "wilderness area" right in the heart of Wellington.

What have the groups done?
The Otari-Wilton's Bush Care Grouphas cleared weeds and planted riparian species along 1.5 kmof the banks of theKaiwharawhara Stream from Ian Galloway Park to Otari-Wilton'sBush.The project has been running forseven years, with over 25,000 native plants established.
Volunteers have included many local residents, school children, members of the Global Volunteers Network and corporate bodies on "team-building" planting days.
Seeds for the planting are sourced from Otari Reserveand considerable support and input is received from Wellington City Council staff at Otari.
The group has been very successful andare now extending their efforts to other sitesalong the Kaiwharawhara Stream in partnership with theTrellissick Park/Ngaio Gorge Working Group.
The Trelissick Park/Ngaio Gorge Working Group has provided practical care for the natural and human heritage to be found in the Trelissick Park and Ngaio Gorge areas, as well as regularly providing input to park and environmental management plans and resource consents that affect the lower Kaiwharawhara Stream and Korimako Stream areas.
The Group includes representativesfrom many of the community and resident associations in this part of Wellington, and environmental interest organisations such as Forest and Bird and the Wellington Botanical Society.
Current activities
The groups have jointly, and succssfully, appliedforTake Care funding to expand on their current projects.
Work has started ata site between Otari-Wilton's Bush Reserve and Trelissick Park at Blackbridge Road. The aim is to put in some 2500 native plants that are already being grown and cared for at Otari.Construction work has recently beenundertaken at the siteto improve fish passage through a culvertwhich until recently created a "waterfall", restricting fish movement upstream.
Other projects include in-filling some areas of previous planting between Otari and Ian Galloway Park. There will be a new planting site close to Otari-Wilton's Bush Reserve, and at least another two planting areas in Trelissick Park. Following weed clearance planting will begin in May 2007. New volunteers are always welcome to attend.
