Hutt River trail no trial

Hutt-River-Trail.jpg

The Hutt River Trail weaves its easy way for 27 kilometres alongside the Hutt River, revealing the different moods of the valley itself, from the former industrial heartland at its estuary, to the bush bound white-water gorges where the river narrows into the hills.

Along the way the trail offers plenty to see and do. Walk, run or cycle the level path, or pack up the family – including the dog - and enjoy a picnic by the river.

Even in winter, the water is perfect for kayaking, rafting and fishing, but it is summer when you can take true advantage of the river by swimming in the many swimming holes around Silverstream and Birchville.

The trail starts at Hikoikoi Reserve on Petone’s Marine Parade and runs along the western side of the Hutt River with track loops enabling you to view both sides of the water. Now part of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail, the river trail runs to the Plateau Store at Te Marua. From there it is an easy ride to Maymorn and the entrance to the historic railway formation from the Hutt Valley to Wairarapa
