History back on track at Waikanae
A piece of history has returned to Waikanae Station thanks to the determination and effort of some people passionate about Waikanae and rail.
When Norma McCallum, of Keep Waikanae Beautiful, noticed a panel telling the rich history of the station had been lost in transition to the new railway station in 2011, she insisted something was about it.
The Regional Council agreed and enlisted rail historian and author David Parsons to not only painstakingly research and produce a replacement, based on a picture of the original panel, but to include updated information about the extension of the commuter line to Waikanae in 2012. The new panels were recently unveiled in a ceremony at the station.
