Have your say on Waikanae River stopbanks upgrade
GWRC is planning to upgrade the Jim Cooke Park stopbank to protect the community from major flooding from the Waikanae River.
Two stopbank options are being investigated for the stretch of the river along Te Moana Road between the equestrian centre and Nimmo Avenue East. The first involves replacement of the current stopbank with a larger, stronger stopbank.
This would require reconfiguration of the sports fields at Jim Cooke Memorial Park and the removal of some trees.
However, the impact on the environment would be minimised over time through a planting programme which would reinstate trees along the course of the river. The other option is a combination of stopbank and concrete wall.
Both will be outlined in detail at a public open day where detailed information will be available, and GWRC staff will be on hand to take people though the finer details of each approach to help inform submissions.
The open day will soon take place, so look out for a public notice in the Kapiti Observer.
