Greater Wellington measures tide levels and sea temperatures at several locations in the Wellington region. In addition, we also monitor the water quality at many of our beaches to assess suitability for swimming.

Te Whanganui-a-Tara, or the great harbour of Tara, was first discovered by the Polynesian explorer Kupe.

Porirua Harbour is located 21km north of Wellington city. The harbour was originally named Parirua which translates to "twin flowings of the tide".
