Getting Involved on the Waikanae River
The Waikanae River and floodplain is regionally significant as a recreational resource. The river is used for fishing and swimming, and the banks are ideal for walking, birdwatching, picnicking and horse riding.
In the lower reaches of the river between Otaihanga and the river mouth, there are a variety of landscapes to enjoy. There are sand dunes, the estuary, beach, open watercourses, wetland areas as well as views of Kapiti Island.
Walkers can enjoy the Waikanae River Walkway, a favourite local walk from State Highway One to the beach on either side of the river. There are reserves at regular intervals along the northern bank that make great picnic spots. Horse riding is allowed on the south bank of the river.
Otaihanga Domain provides a footbridge for access across the river and is a short stroll from the beach. It is well used in summer with people swimming and enjoying the rivers waterholes. Fishing is also very popular along the river with the best spots in the middle and lower reaches.
