Before you apply for your resource consent we strongly recommend that you talk to us so we can make sure you apply for the right type of consent and provide enough information for us to fully assess your application. We do not usually charge for this pre-application advice.
To read more about applying for a resource consent from Greater Wellington download Applying for a resource consent brochure.
See also Applying for a resource consent - an everyday guide to the Resource Management Act series available from the Ministry for the Environment.
You pay an initial fixed application fee in advance to cover the estimated cost of assessing and processing your resource consent application. The fee is based on staff time charged at $126.50 per hour (including GST) plus any disbursements as outlined on our schedule of application fees below.
The final cost depends on how much time is actually spent processing your application which may be more or less than the fee paid. If you withdraw your application we refund any unused portion of your fee. If we decline your application - you do not get a refund.
For more details on application fees download our Resource management charging policy (2011).
Non-notified applications
Initial fixed application fees range from $362.50 to $2,087.23 (including GST) depending on the type of consent you apply for. However, the actual cost may be more or less than the application fee you pay, depending on the size and complexity of your proposal. We’ll let you know if it is likely to be more and, once a decision has been made on your application, bill you for the extra cost. If the actual cost is less than the fee you’ve paid (by $20 or more), we’ll refund the difference.
Publicly notified or limited notified applications
Initial fixed application fees are $5,060 (including GST) for a limited application fee or $10,120 (including GST) for a fully notified application fee. A further fixed application fee is required if a hearing is required to determine your application. This fee is $2,300 per scheduled half hearing day and is invoiced prior to your hearing. We’ll provide a cost estimate once we’ve received and assessed your application, and revise it as needed during the application process.
