Gearing up for Baring Head

Posted on 7 February 2011

On Sunday 13 February the public will get its first opportunity to visit the iconic Baring Head site – the latest addition to Greater Wellington’s regional parks network.

“This is an historic occasion that has been eagerly anticipated by the community,” says Cr Prue Lamason, one of Greater Wellington’s Lower Hutt councillors.

“Up until now Baring Head’s spectacular cliffs, escarpments, terraces and the lighthouse have usually only been viewed from afar – so it’s fantastic that this spectacular piece of land is now ready for people to enjoy and explore.”

Everybody is welcome to attend the opening ceremony, which will begin at 9.30am with a powhiri from Taranaki Whānui kaumātua Sam and June Jackson. Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson, Greater Wellington Chair Fran Wilde, Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace and Joy Baird – Chair of the newly formed Friends of Baring Head Trust – will each make a short speech, and Greater Wellington Social and Cultural Wellbeing Committee Chair Cr Nigel Wilson will emcee the ceremony.

Greater Wellington’s Parks Marketing Manager Amanda Cox says that although guided walks have been organised on the day, they are now fully booked. “However, visitors will still be able to explore Baring Head on the day, by taking their own walks or cycling up to the Baring Head Lighthouse and down the river flats.”

Amanda warns that parking will be limited and advises visitors to book a seat on a bus from Waterloo Station that Greater Wellington has organised for the event.

Baring Head was purchased by Greater Wellington, Department of Conservation, Nature Heritage Fund, Hutt City Council and a private contributor, and is being managed by Greater Wellington as a part of East Harbour Regional Park.
