Friends of Petone Dunes
This group is based at Petone Beach in the Wellington Harbour and have been working towards restoring the dune ecosystem at Petone since 2006. Work has included planting fore dune species such as Spinifex and Pingao as well as native back dune plants. Other work includes ongoing weeding and releasing.
The Friends of Petone Dunes group have been working in front of the sea wall east of the Petone Wharf, and more recently at sites west of the wharf and at the east end of the beach. They have several planting days throughout the planting season (Autumn/Winter) and regular working bees to maintain the restoration site. The group have also assisted with the monitoring of scientific trials set up on the dunes in 2007 to study native dune plants by Dave and Michael Bergin from Environmental Restoration Ltd.
Current aims and activities of the Friends of Petone Dunes group
Restore dunes as a natural feature of the Petone Beach for:
- Mitigation against potential rising sea level
- Minimizing storm surge damage
- Mitigation against tsunami
- Restoration of native biodiversity
- Reduction in wind-blown sand to streets and properties adjacent to the beach
The Friends of Petone Dunes have working bees and planting days (autumn/winter) every first and third Thursday of the month throughout the year. Meet at 9am at the Petone Wharf.
