Friends and Residents of Karori Stream (FROKS)
The FROKS group are co-ordinating the restoration of Karori Stream where it runs along the length of South Karori Road. This will involve working in with Greater Wellington’s Streams Alive programme to target streamside margins on private land, as well as actively restoring a variety of sites on public land.
Some of the restoration activities the group has been involved in so far include:
- digging out Montbreccia and controlling other weeds,
- revegetating streambanks with appropriate eco-sourced native plants, and
- fencing restoration areas to exclude wild goats and sheep.
Their first site at the far end of South Karori Rd has been transformed from a barely accessible, weed infested area into a beautiful family-friendly community asset with steps down to a picnic area.
They are also planning to put together a comprehensive restoration plan including:
- planting plans for the different restoration sites along the stream,
- a pest animal control strategy including trapping pest animals along the stream edges,
- a weed management plan for the the length of the stream along South Karori Road, and
- a communications plan to keep the wider community involved in and informed about the project.
FROKS are also planning to investigate opportunities to involve students from the local Karori West Normal School to be involved in the project.
