Enter the world of Maori weaving
Take a trip into the past world of Māori weavers this Thursday [25 February] by booking a place on Harakeke – Flax Weaving on the Coast, held at Paekakariki’s weaving club in Queen Elizabeth Park.
“This evening of Māori weaving promises to be very special,” says Margaret Jackson of the Te Rau o Te Rangi Weaving Collective. “The setting is lovely and we’ll be providing a friendly, helping atmosphere for participants to learn all the essentials and ask as many questions as they like.”
The evening will begin with a welcome, followed by a demonstration on the best way to harvest harakeke – or flax – and information on how to look after your own harakeke bushes. Then members of the collective will help participants create their own pieces of weaving, which they’ll be able to take home with them. The evening will be rounded off with a sausage sizzle.
