Energy
Greater Wellington wants a resilient community that, as far as possible, is reducing its carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of global warming, but is also adapting well to any changes caused by climate change.
Energy is one of the elements that Greater Wellington has identified as contributing to the quality for life outcomes we wish to achieve. If we are to have sufficient energy for future generations it is important that everyone starts to use energy responsibly.
We are making our contribution by ensuring that we minimise direct and indirect energy use in all of our activities.
Examples of our where we are contributing to reducing energy use include:
- Operating the water supply system optimally
- Funding and promoting public transport
- Cycling and walking programmes
- Investigating local solutions for greater use of renewable energy.
- Wind energy projects
-
The Mt Climie site is a long high ridge to the east of Upper Hutt and is adjacent to Mangaroa and Whitemans valleys. Because of the height of the ridge above the surrounding land, wind speeds are extremely high, even by international standards.
- Puketiro wind farm development
-
As a result of public consultation in July 2005, Greater Wellington received over 1300 submissions on the proposed wind farm site. A sub-committee was formed and submitters were heard in October/November.
- Existing wind turbines
