Abstract This report presents a comprehensive analysis of monitoring and research carried out over the last 10 years to better understand benthic cyanobacteria (toxic algae) blooms in rivers in the Wellington Region and the environmental factors that contribute to them. Particular emphasis is given to the Hutt River catchment in which at last 12 dogs have died after coming into contact with toxic algae since summer 2005/06.
