Cycleway work begins

GWRC has started work in earnest on the Queen Elizabeth Park cycleway following word from the Kapiti community to “get on with it”.

Nearly four Olympic sized swimming pools’ worth of fill has been trucked close to the Whareroa Beach car park for smoothing out sections of the route, and 1.3 km of fencing is going up to keep livestock from the cycleway and protect the dunes. Planning is in hand to ensure traffic safety at the trail’s northern entrance and regional iwi are working with us on a name for the trail.

Completion of the trail in January next year can’t come too soon for Kapiti College Year 9 student Paula Hirst. She told a recent meeting of the Paekakariki Community Board that she will use it as much as she can.

“It will save my family money that is much needed and give me the exercise I need because I don’t get much when I get home from school,” she said. “I’ve just discovered biking and can’t wait for the cycleway to open.”
