Can they see you?
Dull and dark conditions make it difficult for motorists to see cyclists – but it’s easy to be bright and seen.
“Now’s the right time to check your cycling visibility equipment, with daylight hours getting shorter,” says Greater Wellington’s Active Transport and Road Safety Coordinator Simon Kennett. “Make sure you have reflective clothing and lights with fresh batteries. You might even want to upgrade your lights if they’re old, as the quality of lights keeps getting better.”
Simon says that lights are a good idea whenever riding in dim light conditions. “In fact, a European study found that using flashing lights during daylight hours reduced your chances of a crash by about 12%.”
Cyclists need:
- White front lights
- Red rear lights (flashing lights recommended)
- Bright and reflective clothing
