Business Environmental Leadership Award

Guidelines for nominations

This award recognises businesses working with Greater Wellington to improve their environmental performance, reduce their carbon emissions, or adopt more sustainable approaches to the management of their waste, energy and transport. Leading businesses will be performing well against the criteria and will have policies, systems or procedures to manage their environmental impacts and motivate staff. These businesses may also be undertaking initiatives to make their supply chains more sustainable.

The award is open to businesses that have been working to improve their sustainability for more than a year and which have a relationship with Greater Wellington.(such as participating in a programme like Envirosmart or receiving advice from the council).

 

Applications and judging

Applications open in June and close in September. For more information click on the Business Environmental Leadership Award application form. Email completed application forms along with any photos to awards@gw.govt.nz. .

Winners are selected by a judging panel including a councillor, a senior member of Greater Wellington's staff and an external expert.

Criteria

Key factors considered include:

  • Measures to improve environmental performance, or manage waste, energy and transport on a sustainable basis
  • Measures to reduce carbon emissions
  • Systems and procedures in place for managing environmental impacts
  • Measures to raise staff awareness of environmental issues and encourage internal behaviour change
  • Measures to improve the sustainability of their supply chains.

Awards presentation

The award will be announced and presented at a function hosted by Greater Wellington in early December. The winner will receive a certificate and $500. Merit awards may also be made to suitable candidates.
