Big project, big effort, big gains
The restoration of Te Awarua o Porirua Harbour is one of the biggest community driven projects the Wellington region has seen.
Greater Wellington Regional Council, Porirua City Council and Wellington City Council are working in partnership with Ngati Toa Rangatira and with the support of other agencies and the community to improve the health of the harbour.
We have already seen an improvement in sediment reduction and improved ecological health and a reduction in litter as a result of the efforts of these people over the past many years. There is plenty more work to be done and the Porirua Harbour and Catchment Strategy and Action Plan sets out the goals and tasks needed to keep the harbour clean.
