Bicycles and public transport

Cycles on trains

  • Folding bikes can be carried on all Metlink bus services. Please be aware that some peak hour bus services are often full, and may not have room for large items. If you have a bag, please use it when taking a folding bike on a bus.
  • Bikes are carried for free on the East West Harbour ferry. Six to eight cycles can be taken per crossing, depending on available space. If you are part of a group travelling with cycles, it is best to call 04 499 1282 first.
  • Bikes are carried for free on the Wellington Cable Car when space is available at the staff discretion.
  • Bikes are carried for free on trains on the Metlink network subject to conditions. Some restrictions apply, particularly during peak periods.

Wairarapa Line

  • Bicycles and luggage are carried in the generator van on the Wairarapa Line.
  • Tranz Metro will not normally refuse carriage of bicycles and luggage if the space is available, however they cannot guarantee to carry large un-booked items on days when there also happens to be heavy demand for the shared space. Therefore they request you book ahead especially if travelling in a group.
  • On week days the first 3 trains into Wellington and the last three out are the peak commuter services. Larger groups should use the off-peak services if at all possible. Note that non-standard bikes such as tandems or bikes with trailers are more difficult to accommodate.
  • If you are travelling as a group, they can increase bicycle carrying capacity by employing the spare generator van, which provides electricity backup as well as spare space for luggage and bicycles, but you need to book in advance.
  • Book with Tranz Metro ph 04 498 3103 and they will advise the best times to travel. There is no additional fee for using the group booking service.
