Swim where it's safe

Make sure your favourite swimming spot's safe by checking out the water quality before taking a dip this summer.

Greater Wellington posts weekly water quality results of 100 popular beach and river swimming spots using a traffic light system on www.gw.govt.nz/on-the-beaches. A green light is for "go" and means the health risk is low.

River users should also keep an eye out for toxic blue-green algal blooms, which are common during low river flows and warm temperatures. The algae can be fatal to dogs and livestock if eaten, and can make humans sick. Blue-green algae is assessed weekly during summer at 21 river spots.
