Students give environment a helping hand
| Winning weedbusters |
Students from three classes at Karori West Normal School recently gave the environment a helping hand by clearing an area behind Karori Park of the environmental weed montbretia ( Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora). With help from Greater Wellington biosecurity staff, the students learnt about pest plants and their impact on the region. The project was as part of a wider study focussing on conservation and the environment.
The students split into groups and had a competition to see who could dig out the most montbretia bulbs (pictured is the winning team). The next stage of the project is for the school to adopt the area and restore it by planting native trees.
