Silverstream Care Group

The Silverstream Care group is a collaboration between Upper Hutt Forest and Bird and the Silver Stream Railway, formed to restore Hull’s Creek which runs through Wallaceville, Heretaunga, Silverstream, Pinehaven and the Silverstream landfill. This group is restoring a stretch of this stream from Field Street in Silverstream to the confluence with the Hutt River (opposite Reynolds Bach Drive). They are working to improve the habitat of the stream for fish and aquatic insects and to create a corridor of native plants for birds.

At this site the group has:

  • Removed problem trees such as willows and a range of other weed species
  • Planted and cared for nearly 12,000 native plants, from small streamside sedges, to large kahikatea trees
  • Created a fish pass to enhance the passage of native fish to the upper stretches of the stream
  • Involved local school, community and business groups

There are working bees held throughout the year which anyone can attend. During the planting season (April to September) working bees are usually held on the last Saturday morning of the month. During the rest of the year (October to March) working bees are usually held on the last Thursday evening of the month. New members are always welcome, as are corporate groups (such as businesses, government departments, or community groups) that want to give a half or full day back to the community, and have a great experience at the same time.

You can contact the group on the numbers below to volunteer or find out when work is next planned.
