Planning an event

If you are planning to hold an event on or in the water, whether it is swimming, sailing, kayaking, water skiing or other boating race or event, then you need to get in touch with us. This will help you run a successful event and ensure the safety of participants and other water users.

What we will do for you

Greater Wellington Harbours will ensure that your event does not clash with another planned activity in the same area that could disrupt your event or put your participants at risk. We  will check that you have made adequate safety provisions.

Some events will require a temporary suspension of some bylaws. This usually involves powered boats that wish to exceed speed limits. For any bylaw suspension we must put a public notice in the newspaper between 7 and 14 days before the event. This means you need to notify us at least four weeks before the event.

If you are unsure if your event requires a bylaw suspension, give us a call and we can discuss your requirements.

We will also remind you of other safety precautions, such as checking the weather and shipping movements during the event.

To notify us of a planned event, contact us during office hours on T 04 830 4160 or email us at harbours@gw.govt.nz.

Event forms can be downloaded for Porirua and Wellington harbours.  Please complete these in plenty of time and return to us.
