Parks and forests
We want to encourage a wider range of people into the parks and ensure that all park visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience. We spent $1.24 million monitoring and maintaining the recreation and heritage facilities at our parks last year. For example, we have improved the tracks, bridges and signage at East Harbour Regional Park. The popular tracks, such as Butterfly Creek, are now more accessible and safer for visitors.
Greater Wellington manages significant landholdings in several regional parks on behalf of the owners. This year we confirmed arrangements with Hutt City Council and the Department of Conservation over land they own in East Harbour Regional Park and Belmont Regional Park. We can now start reviewing the management plans for both these parks.
Many people say they appreciate these natural assets which are so close to our city centres.
