Encouraged by the success of the Waitohu Stream Care Group who started managing the sand dunes at the south end of the Waitohu Stream, the Otaki North Beach Care Group has been formed to look after the sand dunes to the north.
Contact the Greater Wellington care group faciltator on 04 384 5708 or 0800 496 734.
What has the group done?
The group has identified the need to care for the area. Some of the sand dunes are in reasonably good condition and need just a little care from people using the beach. Other dune areas have been damaged and require a lot of extra work to get them back into good condition and prevent them moving into the dairy farms inland.
Current activities
The group is placing tape fences along the base of the sand dunes to discourage people, motorbike riders, quad riders and four wheel drive owners from riding over the sand dunes. Driving vehicles over the sand dunes destroys the plants which are very important in keeping sand dunes stable.
The group will alsoput educational signs along the dunes and at high profile beach access points highlighting the importance of looking after the beach.
