Lights on small boats at night

Paddlers and other small boat users, who are out on our harbours at night without displaying lights cause a great deal of concern.

Bylaws requires that, in Wellington and Porirua harbours, any paddled or rowed vessel must show a white all-round light where it can best be seen. An infringement of this bylaw carries a $200 instant fine, or around twice the price of a light!

Waka ama users have responded well to requests to carry lights. Their Wellington Association, Hoe Tonga Waka Ama, took the initiative of placing a bulk order for lights to distribute around the various member clubs. A good effort.

Unfortunately others, including some kayakers, still frequent parts of the harbour well after sunset with no light visible. Any powered vessel heading towards home will be looking into the lights of the city. That makes seeing a small craft difficult enough – if no lights are displayed it makes it impossible.

If you need a light try Ferg's Kayaks, Queens Wharf or Canoe & Kayak at the bottom of the Ngauranga Gorge. They have these readily available, as would other kayak or outdoor pursuits stores. Excellent information is available on the Waka Ama Association website. Kayakers will find the information equally applicable.

Remember, Be Safe, Be Seen.
