 What has the group done?

The wetlands are part of the Henley Lake complex. The wetlands were created as part of the overall development plan for the complex. Over time, the wetlands have become weed infested and lost their value as bird habitat. The group wishes to restore the three wetlands and provide some interpretation about the birds that use the area and plants that grow there.

Current activities

Following the development of a concept plan in 2003 and the reforming of wetland areas into a series of wader ponds, Henley Trust has been coordinating the planting of channel banks and pond margins with selected native species.

School groups, volunteers and friends have been progressively planting these areas. Ongoing relationships with Lakeview School, St Patricks School and this year with Douglas Park School include a contract with the schools to return to do follow up weeding and maintenance rather than do a few hours planting and then lose any interest.

Periodic detainees assist with weeding and mulching.

Interested individuals or groups are encouraged to take responsibility for selected areas of their choice and work to maintain them at their leisure.

Regular working bees are now being scheduled for the first Monday of each month (9.00 am to 11.00 am) with participants meeting at the Men’s Shed, Colombo Road.
