Masterton

Henley wetland planting day

Henley Trust 2003 is working in conjunction with Masterton District Council to develop and enhance the Henley Lake Complex , a 43 hectare artificial lake, stream and wetland area on the eastern boundary of Masterton.

Henley Lake is visible and accessible from Te Ore Ore Road (the road from Masterton to Caslepoint) and also accessible from Colombo Road.

Limestone paths run through the reserve and a site map and notice board with topical information is displayed at each entrance.

Following a concept plan developed in 2003, this group has coordinated planting to compliment the many wetland ponds and feeder streams which manage and filter the overflow water from the main lake.  This work improves the habitat for birds, fishes and insects.  In addition contaminants and nutrients are stripped from the water which finally filters through gravel and back into the Ruamahanga River.

As well as initial preparation work and on going weed control the group has:

  • Coordinated annual planting programmes with Lakeview School with Where There is Water funding assistance from BOC.
  • Undertaken the replacement of the Maze with Street Tree sample plantings with the help of St Patricks School students.
  • Established an area representative of the lowland swamp forest that used to cover much of the Waiararapa.

During the winter, planting days are organised in conjunction with the various schools, and any assistance is welcomed.

Regular working bees are held on the first Monday morning of each month (come to the Men’s Shed on Colombo Road) or contact Tenick Dennison 06 377 5200.
