Help us take care of our region
People working to manage or restore the region's natural environment are invited to apply for assistance from Greater Wellington's community environmental programme, Take Care.
Through Take Care, Greater Wellington gives financial support and specialist assistance to community groups to work on environmental projects to restore our region's most threatened ecosystems, including rivers and streams, lakes and wetlands, estuaries, dunes and coastlines.
Preference is given to projects which help the environment over the long term by restoring an area's ecological integrity. Projects need to aim to become self-supporting, promote community involvement and help people to take more responsibility for caring for the environment...
"The Take Care programme is a partnership with the community to help solve local environmental problems with as little red tape or fuss as possible," Greater Wellington's Community Environmental Projects team leader Robyn Smith says.
"Our main aim is to provide support to communities and encourage greater stewardship of their local environment. Over the 11 years since the programme has started we've seen many groups enhance local biodiversity and also develop a sense of community."
Applications close on 13 March 2009. "We cannot guarantee that all projects which fit our criteria will be funded as there are a limited number of places available within the program." For more information on how to apply see the Take Care page or contact Robyn Smith, robyn.smith@gw.govt.nz, P 803 0367.
