Have your say on Porirua & Tawa bus changes

Posted on 20 March 2009

Running all buses through Porirua city centre, longer weekend and evening services and a new Aotea bus service are some of the changes being proposed for bus services in Porirua and Tawa.

Greater Wellington is asking people what they think of the proposals. A consultation document has been sent to all residents in Porirua and Tawa, and an open day will be held at North City Shopping Centre on Tuesday 7 April.

Peter Glensor, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Transport and Access Committee, said services in Porirua and Tawa had been under the spotlight for some time. “Greater Wellington and Mana Coach Services are absolutely committed to improving local bus services – this involves making some routes more direct, such as from Titahi Bay, creating a new service to Aotea to meet increasing demand, and changing some poorly patronised services such as those around Porirua East.

“We’re very keen to make it easier for people to consider taking the bus instead of the car, so the current level of connections between bus and train services will continue. And we’re suggesting a lot of services run later in the evenings and more frequently at peak time and weekends.”

He said proposals to have all buses run through Porirua city centre along a central route, similar to Wellington city’s ‘Golden Mile’ will make bus travel simpler for residents and visitors alike. “The proposed changes to the city centre bus routes will also add vibrancy and vitality to the area.

“But these are all only proposals at the moment – everything is up for discussion and we are very interested to hear what people think.”

Feedback is required by Monday 27 April. People can complete a feedback form online or at the back of the consultation brochure. Greater Wellington staff will be on hand to talk to people and answer questions at an information stall at North City Shopping Centre (near Hallensteins) on Tuesday 7 April from 10am-4pm. Information is also available at Porirua Library.

All those who complete a feedback form will go into a draw to win one of three Mana Coach Services SmartCards each with $100 pre-paid.
