Greater Wellington and sustainability
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important to the community – so what is Greater Wellington doing?
- Home insulation and clean heating assistance
-
Greater Wellington Regional Council is participating in the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority’s home insulation and clean heating scheme by providing financial assistance of up to $2,600 per ratepayer to fund the remaining cost of home insulation and clean heating over and above the grant provided by EECA. This can be repaid by way of a targeted rate over a 9-year period. Greater Wellington’s scheme will be available from April 2010.

- Promoting and investing in the region’s public transport network
- Helping community groups to look after their local environment
- Coordinating tree planting days (trees absorb carbon dioxide – a greenhouse gas)
- Supporting young people to take responsibility for the environment through the Take Action for Air and Take Action for Water school programmes
- Supporting programmes that encourage businesses and households to be sustainable and reduce emissions
- Investing in flood protection as changing weather patterns may increase flooding.
