Glenside Stream Care Group

Glenside Stream

Members of the Glenside Streamcare group are working on the restoration of three sites around the Glenside area:

Stebbings Stream

  • Stebbings Dam site – at the end of Stebbings Road, on the northern side of the dam side wall
  • Debris Arrestor site – southwards (for about 200 metres) of the debris arrestor (a flood control structure in the Porirua Stream just south of Willowbank)
  • Rowell's Road Site – at the intersection of Rowells Road and Middleton Road, Glenside

Stebbings Dam 2 years on

The Stebbings Dam site was the original site where native planting began on the grassy and weedy banks of the dam side wall. The plantings are now well established with the group providing on-going weed control and interplanting of open areas.

The Debris Arrestor site is a length of Porirua Stream about 200 metres southwards of the flood-control structure. Here, the group has controlled weeds, removed the willows, and planted the stream side in locally sourced natives. The plantings are quite large now and only require further weed control and some interplanting.

Testing the water for silt

The most recent site is the Rowell’s Road site. This site is from the intersection of Middleton Road and Rowell’s Road and goes northwards to the main bend in the Porirua Stream – about 300 metres. This is steep site and contained a great deal of roadside and ‘fly-tipping’ rubbish. It has taken the group the best part of two years to clean-up the site and remove the dense thicket of blackberry vines. This is now complete, and the group has progressively planted up the site with natives. Due to the extensive blackberry coverage, the site will require ongoing weed control and interplanting with natives.
