Where can you find the group?

The restoration site is along Owhiro Stream, alongside Ohiro Road, Brooklyn. Check out an aerial photo of the area. The group also has a shade house at the Brooklyn Resource Centre, 36 Jefferson Street, Brooklyn.

What has the group done?

Friends of Owhiro Stream (FOOS) formed in 2003 with a view to restoring and protecting Owhiro stream.The stream isthe only unpiped stream flowing to the south coastin Wellington City. It provides important habitat foraquatic animalsand the surrounding bush acts as a valuable connecting corridor between places such as Karori Wildlife Sanctuary and the town belt.

Recent surveys show that banded kokopu and shortfin eels are living in the stream. The group hope to see all five species ofinanga return to the stream eventually.

Work underway on the stream

So far, with the helpof the local community,Friends of Owhiro Streamhas planted almost3000 native trees.Wellington City Council have provided additional supportby providingextensive weed control and supplying plants. FOOS haveinvolved local schools with their planting programme.
