Ngati Awa Camp

Where can you find the group?

Proposed planting site

The Friends are based at the Ngati Awa Camp in Reikorangi, inland from Waikanae.  They are planting an area that borders the stream running through the campsite.

Current activities

The Friends are preparing a planting plan and have erected a shadehouse to grow native plants from local seed sources.

The campsite is well used by visiting groups for camping, art activities, sports, and recreation, but it has become home to many invasive weeds.  The banks of the stream which run through the camp have also suffered extensive erosion in recent flood events.  The Friends want to get rid of the weeds and plant natives along the edge of the stream to improve the water quality, reduce erosion and increase indigenous biodiversity in and around the stream. This winter they planted toetoe, flax, cabbage trees and sedges to stabilise some of the steepest areas.

In the longer term, the shadehouse and planting site will be developed as an educational resource and provide activities for visitors to the camp.
