Free guided rainforest walks

Discover a beautiful New Zealand rainforest in the spectacular Kaitoke Regional Park. The free walks offer stunning views of rivers and valleys and visits the spot used for Rivendall in The Lord of the Rings.

The walks start at 10am from the Pakuratahi Forks carpark on the following days:

  • Friday 9 September
  • Thursday 15 September
  • Wednesday 21 September
  • Saturday 24 September
  • Thursday 29 September
  • Friday 30 September
  • Thursday 6 October
  • Friday 7 October
  • Thursday 13 October

There's no need to book and the walk is suitable for most fitness levels.  The walks take about one hour.  The walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies.

Running an event at Kaitoke Regional Park

With its superb temperate rainforest and grassy clearings, Kaitoke Regional Park is ideal for nature-based events, group walks or picnics. The large barbecue facility in the campsite may be reserved for weddings, corporate or other private functions.The parkis especially popular with schools and clubs, as participants may camp overnight if they wish.

If you would like to run an event or activity in Kaitoke Regional Park, please contact the park ranger to discuss your ideas and to obtain the relevant forms so that you can apply for a concession. Commercial activities require a full concession that is processed at GW's Wellington office. Most non-commercial activities require a streamlined concession that is processed by a park ranger.  In most cases you also require a health and safety plan.

You should allow at least 15 working days for your application to be processed.
