Coastguard boating education
Coastguard Boating Education offers afull range of recreational and maintenance courses such as Day Skipper, Boatmaster, Radio operator and Diesel maintenance. These courses have something for everyone from a complete novice buying their first boat to those wishing to take their boat throughout the Pacific and beyond. If you would like information on becoming a member of coastguard, follow this link to look for units in your area. This is a great way to get involved in boating and coastguard provides a valuable service to all the boating community. It can also be an excellent way to gain local knowledge.

Boatsafe
Boatsafe is an education programme run by the New Zealand Water Safety and the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Visit their website for more information about how to have an enjoyable and safe time on the water - sea, river or lake.
Commercial qualifications
If you want to operate a commercial or passenger vessel you will need a commercial qualification. There are several excellent maritime schools,including the NZ Maritime School, and Nelson Polytechnic. See their websites for more information.
